In recent years, relying on ecological advantages such as suitable altitude, climate and soil, the county government has focused on developing the vegetable industry, and continuously improved its planting and management level to achieve high yields and quality.

At the 2nd Boao International Conference on the Development of Geographical Indications, Guidong won the title of “China’s Famous County for Ecological High-Mountain Vegetables”.
The county government has taken the vegetable industry as a leading industry and attached great importance to its development. Relying on the superior natural resources, the county has actively integrated into the construction of the “vegetable basket” base for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) with the business mode that connects companies with cooperatives and farmers.
The county has an average elevation of 900 meters and average temperature of 15.8℃. It boasts a forest coverage rate of 81.97%, with 40,000 negative oxygen ions per cubic centimeter. The unique ecology has nurtured high-altitude vegetables, which have been sold well both domestically and internationally.
Early in the morning, farmers are busy harvesting vegetables in a vegetable base of Huangmaodong village.
These fresh vegetables will be sent to supermarkets and vegetable markets in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Changsha and other places.
He Jiafeng, the production manager of Hunan Zuiyang Alpine Ecological Agriculture Company, said that they are highly favored by markets and citizens around the world for the superior quality.
Now, the company has developed and planted green cabbage, Chinese cabbage, chili pepper and celery in its planting base with an area of over 1,200 mu (80 hectares), supported by one sorting center.
Wang Zhen, head of the company said that the company adopts crop rotation in different areas. On average, it takes two to three months to pick one crop of vegetables, and three different varieties of vegetables can be planted per year.
This year, the total sales volume exceeded 5,000 tons, with a cumulative output value of about 15 million yuan.
In the vegetable production base of the county, many villagers could find satisfactory jobs at their doorstep, so that they can earn money while taking care of their families, resulting in a significant improvement in their living standards.
A local villager said that now the county government is developing the high-altitude vegetable industry, which not only activates rural economy, but also provides flexible and diverse job opportunities for locals.
The rapid development of the vegetable industry not only drives the growth of local economy, but also increases farmers’ income.
Now, Guidong county has formed a high-altitude vegetable production zone covering these towns and villages such as Oujiang, Zhaiqian, Datang and Sidu.
There are 13 large-scale vegetable production leading enterprises such as Xinrong Ecological Agriculture, Quanxi Fruit and Vegetable Professional Cooperative and Hunan Zuiyang Alpine Ecological Agriculture Company, one provincial-level high-quality agricultural product production base, and 10 “vegetable basket” bases for the GBA, with a total area of 52,000 mu (3,466.67 hectares).
It has two enterprises authorized by the “Xiangjiangyuan” vegetable public brand and 8 green food certifications.
In 2024, the output value of the alpine vegetable industry in Guidong county reaches 363 million yuan, with a processing output value of 276 million yuan, helping 3,000 farmers increase income.
