Chenzhou Delegation Investigates Taiwan Modern Agricultural Industry

2012-06-20

Taiwan modern agricultural industry has high levels of development and its agricultural transformation experience is worth learning. On June 16, Qu Hai- Deputy Secretary of Chenzhou Municipal Party Committee and Mayor of Chenzhou city- led Chenzhou delegation of “Passionate Hunan, Meeting in Taiwan” took an inspection on Taiwan modern agricultural industry.

Taiwan agriculture faced the problems in the earlier days like aging labor force, small farmland, imbalance of production structure, farmland pollution and pressure of opening market. But in recent years, it has been focused on developing the fine agriculture to improve high quality agricultural products such as quality-oriented rice, fruits with more terms and added value, etc. Now Taiwan’s agriculture was transformed to be a virtuous circle of “production, life and ecology”.

One of the key points concerned for Chenzhou delegation was the operation module applied by Taiwan industrial production base. Five start tour fruit garden in Fangshan village, Pingdong county is one of the ordinary farmlands in local areas. It is most famous for its wax apple and mango with about 50,000 mu areas rented from local government with annual rent of 50,000 new Taiwan currency (around more than RMB 10,000). It was introduced by the owner of this farmland that the ordinary way they worked for selling the fruits is hiring the workers with short periods in the harvest time and sold all the fruits to agricultural association, who then was responsible for the left selling. Generally speaking, the annual net income of her farmland was about RMB 200,000-300,000 every year by this way. In order to meet the needs of tourists, the farm also got baking machines, by which mango was roasted and dried for tourists. Despite the so called“farm tour”, the main farm income was from sales of fruits, but the consideration was remarkable.

Pineapple cake, one of the most popular specialty of Taiwan is one of the typical cases for Taiwan agricultural products processing industry. It was learned from a business owner in the communication activity in south Taiwan that in the earlier days, pineapple cans as well as pineapple cakes supported local economy. But they were competed by Chinese mainland enterprises after some years for lacking of advantages. Now they find a new way to improve traditional pineapple cakes which can’t be copied by other competitors and this new way helps it to be the main support for local agricultural industry. Regarding Chenzhou agricultural industry, it is with significant reference value for this experience. It was learned that to remain invincible in the competitive market, we should keep guided by the market and combined the local features to develop the unique advantageous product.

Chenzhou municipal leaders- Chen Shezhao, Liao Yuegui, Zhang Yangping, Zhang Xihui and Liu Zhiwei took this investigation together with Qu Hai.
