Recently, “Dongjiang fish” was approved by the General Administration of Quality Supervision as a national geographical indications protection product which was a permanent name card for local product.

Zixing city covers 160 square meters water areas of Dongjiang Lake whose water quality met the standard of national first grade surface drinking water. It is the natural and ideal place to feed the freshwater fish. All the fishes fed there are with multi-amino acids and protein which enabled the fishes to be tasted delicious, and enabled the fishes as the typical type of organic fish and green product. But because Dongjiang fish became more popular, some fishes which were not fed in Dongjiang Lake were pretended to be the brand and sold in the market. Such behaviors affected the fame of Dongjiang fish to some extent. In order to regulate the cultivation and marketing of Dongjiang fish, upgrade the product quality and protect local special agricultural product, Zixing city submitted its application of covering Dongjiang fish as geographical indications protection product to the General Administration of Quality Supervision and was approved successfully.

National geographical indications protection product is for the product which is approved to be named under the geographical name. It is produced in specific area and its quality, fame or other features are fundamentally dependent on local natural and cultural factors. Geographical indications protection product is close to the sound natural environment condition and is with intellectual property feature, which is accepted by most of the countries of the world.

According to “protection regulations of geographical indications product”, all the fishes which are not fed in the specific protection area of Zixing Dongjiang fish and are not produced with the special technologies of the geographical indications protection product are forbidden to be named as “Dongjiang fish”, otherwise it would be regarded as illegal behaviors. The quality and technology supervision departments are authorized to treat the illegal behaviors as unauthorized use or fabricating the special mark of geographical indications product according to product quality law, standardization law, “protection regulations of geographical indications product” and other regulations or laws.
