Unlocking the lock on top of bridge pier and surface, rubbing the 100-meter long and thumb-wide steel cable from the top of bridge pier, and then delivering it to the bottom of the bridge from a window opened on the lower end of bridge surface- those were the processes of replacement of stay cables handled out in Chishi Bridge project site.

The Chishi Bridge would feel uncomfortable for such careful processes of replacement of steel cables if it can think by the way of human, because it got used to steel bars and concretes in last years. “The stay cables placed on Chishi Bridge are different from the big shape as shown to the public, but all are made of 40-50 special steel strands. So in order to replace the stay cables, we have to replace all the special steel strands.” It was introduced by one of the technicians on site.

Because of the fire accident happened on left tower of 6th bridge pier in last October, 9 stay cables were broken. At that time, the main body for the project was almost finished, so no spare cable left. The workers can only use ordinary steel strands temporarily. Due to lacking of anti-corrosion devices, those ordinary steel strands have to be replaced for a period.

The Chishi Bridge project was returned to work on this November 5. The workers were working on the replacement of stay cables from the beginning. “It is like replacing the ribs for the umbrella.” said by the technician. It would take 8-9 working days to replace one stay cable. Two of them have been replaced.

“Now all work is being handled fluently, but now the only concern is the weather condition”, the technician kept introducing to the reporters, “though it is a hard job, all of us would handle it carefully to ensure all work to be fulfilled with good quality and safely. ”
