Multiple measures taken to develop cultural tourism across Hunan

Since New Year’s Day this year, Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province has attracted more tourists. Statistics showed that the city received 13.01 million tourists in 2023, an increase of 230.67% compared to 2022 and 8.15% compared to 2019.

To improve the quality and efficiency of the tourism industry, an annual tourism development conference at provincial and municipal levels will be held in Hunan Province starting from 2022. It aims to promote the comprehensive development and upgrading of the cultural tourism industry in the province, and actively cultivate new consumption growth points in culture and entertainment.
 
Efforts are being made in various regions of Hunan to create new products, services, and formats for cultural and tourism integration with local characteristics and logos.

Changsha City has a rich and profound cultural heritage, with numerous Internet-famous brands. During the New Year’s Day holiday, Changsha saw a boom in tourism, with an increase of 114.17% in tourist trips and 41.51% in tourism revenue. 
 
Relying on its famous Yueyang Tower, Yueyang City has focused on building cultural tourism brands. In 2023, it organized four themed activities, and the tourism economy and market consumption were booming, driving the cultural tourism consumption of the city to over 53 billion yuan.  
 
Chenzhou City strengthened the utilization of natural resources. By hosting the second Hunan Tourism Development Conference, it drove an annual key project investment of 106.8 billion yuan, and turned remote mountainous areas into Internet-famous scenic spots. 
 
Xiangxi has innovated the cultural and tourism products. The immersive art cruise project adds cultural charm to the splendid night scenery of Fenghuang Ancient Town, and further activates the city’s nighttime economy. 
 
In 2023, the province received 657.8 million tourists, a year-on-year increase of 51.28%, and generated a total tourism revenue of 956.518 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 47.43%. 
 
“We will work to promote the transformation of the achievements of the Hunan Tourism Development Conference, and develop beautiful Hunan into a world tourism destination,” said Li Aiwu, director of the Hunan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism.
