There is a continuous stream of trucks with license plates from other provinces such as Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Chongqing in Maqiao Town of Rucheng County.
Since 2021, Maqiao Town has introduced 5 private enterprises and built an 80,000-cubic meter cold storage facility, storing and circulating 160,000 tons of ginger annually. It has become a large ginger storage and trading center in the south of the Yangtze River.
The town is located at 25 degrees north latitude, with an average elevation of over 500 meters. It is a typical sandy soil suitable for growing small yellow ginger. Now, the town has 30,000 mu (2,000 hectares) of small yellow ginger, and Rucheng County has 60,000 mu (4,000 hectares) of small yellow ginger, with an annual output of about 200,000 tons of small yellow ginger.
Some large growers in Rucheng County plant small yellow ginger in neighboring areas such as Chongyi County of Jiangxi Province and Shaoguan City of Guangdong Province by renting land.
After the increase in the planting area and yield, the storage and circulation issues have attracted much attention from Rucheng County. The county has taken multiple measures to support the construction of cold storage.
Zhu Wanbing, general manager of Rucheng Xinlong Agricultural Development Co., Ltd., is the first beneficiary of the measures. He returned to his hometown and built a new 28,000 cubic meter of cold storage facility in July 2021.
Now, there is one national-level demonstration farmers’ cooperative and three municipal-level agricultural industrialization leading enterprises in the ginger industry chain in Maqiao Town. These enterprises have established stable supply and marketing relationships with ginger wholesale markets in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Yangtze River Delta, Northeast China, and other regions.
Private enterprises have made efforts to promote the industrial development.
Chenzhou Chenyi Agricultural Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd. has cultivated the virus-free variety of small yellow ginger within three years through cooperation with scientific research institutions such as Hunan Agricultural University and Nanling Research Institute for Modern Seed Industry, to solve the problem of weakening antiviral ability of continuously planted varieties from the source.
Song Haijian, leader of the Rucheng County Fushou Ginger Farmers’ Professional Cooperative, has developed a series of deep processed products such as dried ginger slices and ginger tea, achieving sales of 20 million yuan in 2023.
In the past, local farmers casually discarded defective ginger, which affected the hygiene and environment. In 2022, Song Haijian introduced equipment to process defective ginger into ginger powder foot bath bags, dried ginger slices for foot bath, and other products.
He Wei, a local villager, used to work on electronic product processing in Guangdong province. After returning to his hometown this year, he invested 40 million yuan to establish Rucheng Sidesheng Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. Currently, a cold storage of 28,000 cubic meters has been built. He hired six streamers to sell local specialties such as Rucheng small yellow ginger online.
Chen Guanzhou, Party secretary of Maqiao Town, said that the industry aimed to solve the safety production problem of cellars in the beginning. There were 1,137 registered cellars in the town for storing small yellow ginger. During the flood season, everyone was worried that the cellars might collapse and injure people.
Later, with the development of the entire industry chain, they were aware that this industry chain could forge a new path of high-quality development.
