It was learned from the National Development and Reform Commission that Dongjiang lake was listed as one of the eco-compensation pilots of national key river basins and water resources. Dongjiang in Guangdong province, Jiulongjiang in Fujian province, Chishuihe in Sichuan province and Luanhe in Hebei province were in the same list.

It was an important institutional guarantee for promoting ecological civilization and constructing beautiful China by establishing such eco-compensation pilot mechanism. Such kind of eco-compensation was granted the ecological protector with reasonable compensation by some means as transfer payment from the exchequer, market transactions, etc.. All the ways were carried out on the basis of comprehensive consideration of the ecological protection cost, opportunity cost, and ecological service value. Rights and obligations of the ecological protectors and beneficiaries were clearly defined by this mechanism.

Dongjiang lake covers 160 square kilometers water surface area and 4719 square kilometers water basin area with a normal water storage capacity of 8.12 billion cubic meters. As a high quality water resource, its surface water quality was kept national Class I standard. Once listed in the national eco-compensation pilots, diversified compensation ways would be carried out in Dongjiang lake, such as some economic and legal means, favorable policies, financial support, training, etc..
